Hull Pirates sign new international forward

Written by

Hull Pirates are delighted to confirm the signing of Lithuanian international forward Ugnius Cizas.

The 20-year-old joins up with the Pirates for the 2016/17 season and becomes our fifth and final import signing for the new season, joining Dominic Osman, Stanislav Lascek, Jaroslav Sarsok and Andrej Themar.

Cizas spent last season playing for Energija Elektrenai in Belarus, posting 43 total points (20 goals and 23 assists) in 34 games.

The forward also has international honours, having represented Lithuania at the recent World Championships. His point-scoring form continued in Zagreb, putting up a tally of two goals and two assists during Lithuania’s five games.

Discussing his move to Hull, Cizas said “I feel great! I’m glad I got the opportunity to join a team with a good roster, I’ve been told they have amazing fans and a nice city with great sporting tradition.

“I would describe myself as a fast, skilled two-way forward. I have good defensive and offensive abilities and also have a strong will to win every battle and every game.

“I know the league because I have a lot of teammates from the Lithuanian national team who have played or are still playing in this league. I know I have made no mistake in choosing to play here in England.

Speaking about personal and team aims for the season, the forward stated that “I hope to be as valuable to the team as I can be, I want to help to win every game and have a good season myself.

“As a team, I hope we can aim to finish in the highest places this season because the team roster looks great. Also, there is still plenty of time to prepare for the season and I think we will go strongly from the start to the end of the season.”

Cizas is also confident that his experience playing for the Lithuanian national team will also help his time here in England. “Playing for Lithuania is always special,” said Cizas, “there is no better feeling than representing your country in international competitions along with your long-time friends, with the nation’s hopes and eyes on you.”

Head Coach Dominic Osman added “we’re really happy about this one, he’s going to bring a whole new level to our speed on offense.

“It’s one of those things where you see a guy like this and the more you look into him, the more you watch the video, he’s one of those players that you genuinely get excited about.

“He’s been playing at the international level and he’s been playing against some very good hockey players. The numbers don’t lie; the kid can flat out play.

“We took a look at all of our options and we wanted to go for the best player that we could find. The more we looked into this player, the more we got excited about him.”
