It's more than the 4 quarters

Most people are aware of the dedication required to run clubs and teams in amateur sport, but few have actually done it and ultimately don’t see what goes on behind the scenes on a day to day basis.

Main stream sports like Football, Rugby, Cricket and Golf that get the headlines and feature on the key media platforms, are well served to encourage new participants from a young age, parents know where to take their kids  for the nearest team, and it’s spoken about on Social Media, it’s easy to reach.

So what about other sports like Basketball? A huge following in the States and rapidly on the increase in the UK, but where do you go and who’s behind it?

Kingston Panthers Basketball club is a National League Club, run by Karl Buitendam, a local Hull guy putting his life and soul into running this club. He’s the coach, the trainer, the kit man and more and his enthusiasm to ensure it’s run professionally was visible from the outset of Tuesday nights training session.

Communication is so important at these levels of sport and throughout the 2 hours, you can see the respect his players have for him. Players travelling from across Yorkshire to ensure they get a good pre season, practising plays and most importantly getting back to full fitness – Karl had them running wall to wall when we walked in!

Karl has his work cut out too with over 10 different nationalities representing the Panthers, players from Belgium, Russia, Syria, and more yet the sporting language takes over and the flowing lay ups and passing and free throws were very impressive.

The league starts for the panthers in October but in the meantime, Karl is organising an All-Star weekend in August, of which details will be on SMO closer to the time.

Kingston Panthers Basketball Club’s aim is to make basketball available, affordable and easily accessible to everyone throughout the Hull & Humber area regardless of gender, race, creed, colour or religion.

The club is committed to encouraging the highest ethical standard. All individuals involved in the club should conduct themselves with integrity in an open, honest, fair and equitable manner.

You can follow the panthers on SMO and on their website here http://kingstonpanthersbasketball.weebly.com

Good luck to Karl and his team for the forthcoming season!
